Cut to your measurements by a weaver whose name we know, shipped duties-paid where we can, re-tailored for life on every piece we stitch. Worn unworn? Thirty days to return.
AUD $5,000 is where a saree stops being a wardrobe purchase and starts being an heirloom. At this band, the silk can be the heaviest pit-loom Banarasi or a triple-twist Kanjivaram with hand-woven temple borders, the zari is real silver-gilt wrapped in 22-carat gold leaf, and the piece is genuinely single-edition — woven by a named family on a loom that has been in the same household for three generations. We make 40 to 60 sarees a year in this band, mostly for women buying their definitive festive or milestone piece, or as gifts for a mother, a milestone anniversary, or a daughter coming of age. Below is how we shortlist, and four pieces we are proud of in this range.
What to look for
Our shortlist criteria
01
Pure pit-loom silk, never powerloom
At this band the silk must come off a pit loom — a wooden frame with a pedal pit dug into the ground. Pit-loom silk has a depth of colour and a hand that powerloom (mechanical) silk cannot replicate. The weaver's name is in the inside tag.
02
Real silver-gilt zari, 22-carat gold leaf
Genuine zari is silver wire wrapped around a silk core and coated in 22-carat gold leaf. It is heavier in hand, deeper in colour, and tarnishes if ignored for ten years. We test every roll. Anything under $5,000 with 'real zari' that does not tarnish is wrong.
03
Hand-woven pallu and border, korvai joined
The pallu, body, and border are woven on three separate looms and joined by hand using the traditional korvai technique. Cheaper sarees weave the whole length on one shuttle — the join lines are invisible but the silk movement is uniform and dull.
04
6.5 yards minimum, 800g+ weight
An heirloom saree should give you 6.3–6.9 metres of silk and weigh between 800g and 1.2kg. Lighter is shortcut; heavier is showing off. We weigh every piece before dispatch and the certificate is in the box.
05
Custom-stitched blouse, optional second blouse
Every heirloom saree includes one custom-stitched blouse. We can stitch a second blouse in a contrasting fabric for $180 — useful for re-styling the same saree across years.
06
Single-edition, with provenance certificate
Every piece in this band ships with a numbered certificate: weaver name, region, loom number, date of weave, raw materials. The certificate doubles as proof for insurance and resale, and the piece holds value in this segment.
Treating $5,000 like the ceiling. The heaviest pit-loom Banarasis with full kundan-set pallus live at $6,500–$9,000. We will tell you honestly if your shortlist crosses the band.
✕
Choosing the saree without weighing the alternative. An $1,800 Chanderi can be more enjoyable to wear five times than a $5,000 heirloom worn twice. Buy for use, not just for legacy.
✕
Skipping the petticoat upgrade. A $5,000 saree over a $30 synthetic petticoat sits wrong. Spend $80 on a silk-cotton petticoat to match.
✕
Storing on a hanger. Heirloom silks crease where the hanger sits. Always store flat in muslin, refolded along a different axis every six months.
Common questions
FAQs
Will an heirloom saree last 30 years?
If stored properly — flat, in muslin, away from light — yes. The silk darkens slightly over decades (this is desirable; it is called patina). The zari may need re-touching at the 20-year mark; we coordinate this with the original weaver where possible.
How do you compare to Sabyasachi or Raw Mango at this price?
We don't, and we don't try. Their sarees start at $4,000 and run to $30,000+. At $5,000 we are an honest commission from named weavers — no designer label, no atelier markup. The silk and zari are comparable; the brand premium is not.
Can I see a real-light video before I commit?
Yes — pieces in this band always ship with a real-light video first. We film the saree in natural daylight on a draped form, plus close-ups of the zari, pallu, and border. Approve before we dispatch.
What if I want a custom colour or motif?
Custom-commissioned heirloom sarees are possible at this band, with 12–16 week lead time and a one-off design fee of $400–$800. We work directly with the weaver family. Email if interested.
