What to wear to an Indian Reception
A post-wedding cocktail evening — Western-formal mixed with Indo-western glamour.
The reception is the evening after the wedding ceremony — often a separate venue, often with a Western-style sit-down dinner, often with a band or DJ. It's the most globalised event of an Indian wedding: black-tie tuxedos sit alongside Indo-western gowns and modern lehengas. The dress code reads cocktail-formal with Indian elevation.
What it is
- An evening event — usually starts 6-8pm, runs late.
- Often the most cross-culturally attended part of the wedding — the bride and groom's non-Indian colleagues, friends from school, work peers.
- Sit-down dinner with speeches, first dance, sometimes cake-cutting.
- More restrained drinking and dancing than the sangeet, more formal than the mehendi.
What to wear
By who you are.
If you're a woman
- A modern Indo-western gown — Indian fabric (bandhani, Banarasi) in a Western silhouette.
- A reception-tier lehenga (lighter than bridal, heavier than sangeet).
- A heavy Banarasi or Kanjivaram saree if you have the confidence in the drape.
- Deep colours — emerald, sapphire, oxblood, midnight, ivory with gold.
If you're a man
- A formal sherwani in raw silk or velvet — knee-length or longer.
- A bandhgala suit (Indian tuxedo) — also acceptable and increasingly common.
- Western tuxedo with a silk pocket square in Indian colour — works for non-Indian guests.
Dress code · do & don’t
Do
- · Lean glamorous — this is the photographed event.
- · Statement jewellery is welcome — long earrings, layered necklaces, bangle stacks.
- · Heels are fine — the venue will be carpeted or wooden floor.
Don’t
- · Don't wear white. Same rule as the sangeet.
- · Don't wear short — knee-length or longer, even for Western dresses.
- · Don't bring a backpack or large tote — small clutch or pochette only.

Common questions
Things we get asked.
Can I wear black?
Generally avoid — many Indian families consider black inauspicious for weddings. Deep navy, midnight blue, or oxblood read similarly elegant without the cultural concern.
I'm a colleague of the groom, not family. How dressed up?
Dress for the venue. A reception at a 5-star hotel ballroom = cocktail-formal. A reception in a casual function space = smart cocktail. When in doubt, slightly overdressed beats underdressed at Indian weddings.
How long is the reception?
Typically 4-6 hours. Plan to stay through the speeches and first dance at minimum, leave gracefully after dessert if you have an early morning.
