The craft

Brasso (burnout) velvet is made by chemically dissolving the pile in a patterned design, leaving a sheer ground fabric visible where the velvet has been removed — the contrast between plush pile and sheer ground creates the pattern, rather than thread or beadwork added on top. This is a different construction to the embroidered velvet pieces elsewhere in the catalogue, and part of why this piece sits at a lower price.
